Dear George,

Frankly, I am surprised by your actions.  They seem petty and intent on being hurtful.  I hope that I am wrong.  However, if this is the case, this type of activity is beneath you.  You are a much better person than what you have said and done indicate.  In any case, I want you to know that I forgive you, and I wish you well.

If the construction of our sunroom and deck has caused you distress, I sincerely apologize.  I did my best to keep the workers from walking on your property as you so bluntly requested.  I found the mess that they would leave from time to time distressing and I expressed my displeasure numerous times to no avail.  The construction process was very stressful for us as it took three times longer than we were told it would take.

Also, I am concerned for your health.  You are stressing yourself out over insignificant and meaningless issues that are of no real importance as they do not affect you or your property in any significant way.  It would be tragic and such a waste if your unnecessary anxieties were to cause you to have another heart attack or some other serious malady.

Perhaps you could benefit from some of the points that Richard Carlson makes in his bestseller Don’t Sweat the Small Stuffand It’s all Small Stuff.  It made a difference in the way I looked at my life and what I wanted to do with the time that I have left before I die.  I hope that when I am lying on my deathbed, I can look back on my life and see that I made a difference to my friends, neighbors and family.  I know one thing for certain, I won’t be thinking about how the grass in my yard looked or about the view from my bedroom window.

We are looking forward to using our deck and sunroom as a place where friends and neighbors can meet and enjoy each other’s company.  We take pleasure in seeing our neighbors gathering in our home where everyone is welcome.  We want to share what we have with our friends and use our home to foster and encourage a positive community spirit.  If you could have attended our celebration party, you would have seen how happy everyone was and how they enjoyed the evening and being with each other.

Lastly, I am hoping that you will rise above the low path you have chosen and stop being so critical and mean.  Try to focus on bringing joy and happiness to those around you.  If you choose to be a blessing to your neighbors and those you associate with, you will give yourself the gift of peace and contentment.  In addition, those around you will count themselves fortunate to know you.

Ever hopeful.

Your neighbor, John
