My friend said, “It all happened by chance.” As I looked at the sun setting on the ocean, I watched the waves crashing on the shoreline for as far as my eye could see, and I pondered his sentiment.
I measured his statement against what I saw before me. I watched the sun slowly set the clouds on fire. The horizon was ablaze. Flaming fingers were painting the sky with breathtaking streaks of awesome yellows and molten gold. Time slowed, and the distant orb gently blew flaming orange kisses across millions of miles of space that stuck to the softening sky. And, then with a brilliant red and somewhat impish grin and a quick wink and a fiery nod the sphere slipped silently below the horizon, bidding me a fond farewell. And, as twilight replaced the fading reds and oranges with buckets of deep blue, indigo, and purple, I wondered again if all of this beauty could have happened by chance?
I looked beneath the deep emerald sea, and I saw the nautilus’ tentacles examining each mystery of life… I heard the giant blue leviathan booming its lonesome song for thousands of miles as it searched for a mate, and heard the ratchet of time record the event in the deepening purple twilight.
Looking into the eyes of the child, I saw her thoughts. They were blooming like a field of wildflowers, and bursting into rainbows of color, and I saw the eagles soaring above colossal mountains that were clothed in shades of mossy green. Inside the child’s mind, I saw love stretching out its hand, and I saw a tear of sadness fall. As my eye scanned the world round, I saw broken hearts crushed by thoughtless words, and beautiful dreams and passionate hopes tossed upon piles of rotting refuse.
I saw evil stabbing the souls of humanity with delight. And the streets, air, and sky were soaked with the black death.
Peace and I soared high above the scene below, and later, as I floated on a breeze through the redwood forest, I felt the cool beat of the owl’s wings upon my face. I smiled as the dragonfly tickled the air with its transparent wings of crinkled glass, and I saw eternity reflected in its gigantic eyes.
Sitting quietly by the pond, I watch a village of cattails dancing to the exuberant beat of the wind’s breezy music, their heads bobbing as they sang their silent song. I paused to notice the incredible strength and flexibility of these rulers of the marsh, and I marveled at their ability to withstand nature’s forces much more eloquently than any skyscraper. Amused, I thought of the engineers and scientists trying to create structures that cannot begin to rival this ordinary plant. I wondered if a person or even a team of people could create structures capable of replicating themselves indefinitely on the wings of the wind while living in harmony with the rest of creation? Could this have happened by chance? I wondered.
As I smell and breathe life’s gentle fragrance and encounter the hearts and souls and minds of those I meet each day… I wonder, how is it that we are endowed with this capacity to communicate? How could this wonderful ability to share ideas and feelings and hopes and dreams happen just by chance? How does a complex system of eyes, nerves, and brain evolve with no intelligent input of any kind? How could mindless electrons whirling in their eternal orbits build such an incredibly interactive system? How could the delicate nuances of the spoken word with its subtle shades of meaning and the flirtatious glance and the angry glare happen by chance? Could infinitesimal bits of inorganic matter such as neutrons, protons, electrons, quarks, neutrinos, etc., orbiting round and round give birth to such elegant and intimate dialogue?
Where did the seemingly infinite amounts of energy and matter that make up the universe come from? When I asked my friend, he had no answers. I asked… could he explain time? Could he tell me how time came to be… or if time had a beginning or will it ever end? Could he tell me what happens if time ends? Could he tell me if there is another life after this one? Will there be anything left? Will time just repeat the entire cycle over and over again until… until what? My friend merely shrugged his shoulders.
As I think, I wonder how it is that I can think.
I know, I think. And, I know that others also think. But how did it happen that we possess this ability? One theory starts eightteen billion years ago when a mysterious, unidentified chunk of matter the size of a basketball from an equally mysterious and unidentified source exploded and formed two hundred billion galaxies composed of two hundred billion stars over a period of eighteen billion years. And, each of these galaxies contain billions of stars that are made of quadrillions of atoms which in turn are made up of centillions of quarks which are made of…
Additionally, Charles Darwin in 1859 posited that galactic dust from a compressed into a ball produced life. Hold on. Wait, just a minute. How could a chunk of matter and a quantity of time give me the ability to think?
Science is defined as a body of systematically arranged facts and truths. Does the theory of evolution present a series of systematically arranged facts and truths? Or is it just speculation?
Shouldn’t scientists first demonstrate in their laboratories how is it that DNA can morph one animal into another before they present evolution as a fact?
series of experiments showing how the mutation of each generation of grasshoppers occurred as the grasshopper evolved into a spider or some other insect? I wondered. Surely, this is not too much to ask if the same event happened by chance millions and millions of times without any intelligent supervision. Perhaps, it would be easier to demonstrate how the three thousand miles of arteries, veins, and capillaries which make up the circulatory system along with the complex interaction of the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, lymph nodes, immune system, etc. evolved in humans. The biology textbooks seem to have omitted this information or is it merely another case of The Emperor’s New Clothes?
If it all happened by chance in an uncontrolled and unsupervised environment with only random happenings and no intelligent input, shouldn’t it be a simple matter for scientists to show how at least a few of the millions of plants and animals evolved on their own? With the advantage of their intellect, a controlled environment, advanced machines, computers, precise measuring tools, lasers, a constant source of power, etc.. After all, it’s just a series of small random steps. How hard could it be? If this is true, why doesn’t science demonstrate how this happened, and how did inorganic material produce life?
What had to happen for life to occur? Given a molten sphere of compressed dust produce the first one celled animals. How did inorganic material transform itself into an organism that is able to contain itself, obtain food, eat, digest and send the correct nutrients to its appropriate parts, and then excrete it. And, have the ability to reproduce and move about on land, air, and water. I only see unanswered questions.
feel that none of this has been demonstrated or proven. All I see are statements like “This “might” have happened or it’s “possible” or “maybe” it happened this way, etc. Is this speculation presented as fact or is it just more primordial soup?
Scientists present the theory of evolution as fact insisting new species are created by a series of small unverified random changes. Variations within plants and animals magically morph from one species into another. The theory is illogical and the fossil record does not support or demonstrate this process. Therefore, I feel it is reasonable to conclude that this is not sound or incontrovertible thinking… its just an overactive imagination. And, if the theory of evolution is not science… then what is it?
Perhaps it is just hope or faith which is defined as 1) belief that is not based on proof 2) belief in the doctrines or teachings of religion 3) the doctrines which are believed 4) a system of belief 5) the obligation of loyalty to keep the faith 6) the observance of this obligation. Syn. doctrine, tenet, creed, dogma, persuasion, religion.
If there is only speculation and no science, the theory of evolution is dogma and evolution is a religion which like all religions must be accepted by faith and must be believed intuitively without proof or fact. It follows, The Origin of the Species written by evolution’s prophet, Charles Darwin is its Bible or is it the Koran? Are proponents of evolution scientists or are they high priests? Could time fabricate everything from nothing and create life from stardust. Could Time be a God? It acts like a God. If you believe there is a God, why couldn’t time create something from nothing and then take the something and make it into a universe?
If man, the intelligent being, with his intellect, abundant knowledge of life and the universe along with his machines and his understanding of energy and almost unlimited resources cannot demonstrate how inorganic matter could evolve into a flower then how could mindless electrons spinning in their endless rhythmic cycles create anything? When scrutinized closely, it seems that this scientific theory is not very scientific.
Visualize with me the beginning of the universe. Can you see the TIme God copulating with space and in an orgasmic cataclysm ejaculate the galactic sperm cloud from which the universe was spawned? If so, this event, commonly referred to as the Big Bang is the holiest of days which must be accepted by faith and faith alone.
Being sacred, the theory of evolution requires an absolute belief and cannot be questioned. Non-believers are excommunicated from the towers of higher learning by the high priests whose knowledge is sacrosanct and who consider themselves wise men and the only ones to possess the ability to speak or discern the truth.
Numb and seeking peace, I’ve decided to give it a rest. I close my eyes and drift into infinity and the presence of my creator. Or, if you prefer to believe in the Time God… be my guest… he’s all yours. I wonder what a Time God would look like? Perhaps, he might look something like this. With the big bang strategically placed and the various ways we identify and describe time are shown including the prehistoric periods and even computer time.
